March is National Women’s History Month

National Women’s History Month had its official start in the United States in 1980. President Jimmy Carter issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8th National Women’s History Week. From that initial message, President Carter said:
“From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often, women were unsung and sometimes their contributions were unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well.”
International Women’s Day
This thirty-year tradition actually has much deeper roots. March was originally chosen to coincide with International Women’s Day, a celebration that began on March 19th, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. On that first Women’s Day, one million women and men rallied in support of women’s rights to work, vote, and hold public office. Since 1995, US Presidents have proclaimed March as Women’s History Month to celebrate the unique contributions women have made to American history.
Celebrating Women at Grand Savings Bank
This National Women’s Month, we are celebrating the 132 incredible women on our staff. That is a whopping 76 percent of our team! Our CAO, Natalie Bartholomew, is especially proud of this fact: “As a career banker and advocate for women in banking, that statistic is inspiring and tells me that while our industry is progressing, GSB is ahead of the curve. It’s empowering to work with so many talented, strong women on a daily basis.”
